Day Trip Report – Guided Birding & Heritage Trip around Dhaka with Couple from USA Nov’25

Species Highlights of this Trip

Couple from The US Mr. and Mrs. Miner were in Dhaka for a 2 Week Tour of Bangladesh and contacted me only two days prior to show them around Dhaka City for few Birds & few Heritage Sites before they head south towards Barisal & Sundarban. Date was: November 11th, 2025.

I picked them up from their Hotel at 5:30AM, went to Purbachal Grasslands for the Lapwings. We saw atleast 5 Yellow-wattled Lapwings along with several Red-wattled and a Grey-headed Lapwing. Other common birds were Common Snipes, Brown Shrike, Bengal Bushlark, Indian x Indochinese Roller etc. We had our Breakfast at a nearby Local Restaurant and they enjoyed learning how Tandoor Oven is used traditionally in Bangladesh.

We then went towards the National Botanical Garden in Mirpur and went to the Bamboo Grove area. We saw fly over Plum-headed Parakeets on the way. Rufous Woodpeckers, grey-headed Canary Flycatchers & Ashy Drongos. One Large-tailed Nightjar flushed and we all got great photos & views. We started looking for the Collared Scops Owl and fortunately found it this time deep inside a grove. We also saw a Lovely pair of Spotted Owlets also.

While resting for a bit we saw a Pair of grey-headed Fish Eagles in the Garden and we finally saw one Stork-billed Kingfisher while on our way out. Sadly this was the last scheduled birding for the day. The guests were hoping to explore some Old heritage Sites in Old Dhaka so we started for it.

We stopped near Lalbagh Fort & had our Lunch First with Basmati Mutton Kacchi, Jali Kebab & Firni + Cashew Nut Drink for Desert. We then Entered the Lalbagh Fort and I told my guests about it’s cool history as best to be ability. They were fascinated by how old it was and how Old Dhaka City has been a Capital of Bangladesh area.

We then went towards Dhaka University Campus, Saw the Shaheed Minar , a monument to commemorate the language Movement back in 1952. We also visited Curzon Hall of Dhaka University which are few very old buildings from the British Colonial Era.

We saw a Pair of Alexandrine Parakeets here with some good views of Black-rumped Flameback & Asian Green Bee-eaters. Then I went on to drop them at Sadarghat Inter-city ship terminal as scheduled and dropped them at the Terminal for their next endeavour.

Zaber Ansary with BirdingBD Tours is super knowledgeable about the birds of Bangladesh. He has an excellent ear and eyes, and knows where to go to find the birds. He is also patient with those who are new to birding. Zaber was by far the best bird guide we found in our two weeks in Bangladesh. In addition to all this he is a nice guy and has pretty good English. Our only regret is that we did not hire him as our guide for our enrite time in Bangladesh!
