Day Trip Report – Guided Birding around Dhaka with Guest from Singapore Oct’25

Species Highlights of this Trip

Guest from Singapore Mr. Joe H. was in Dhaka for work and hired me to show him around Dhaka City on a free weekday.

I picked him up from his Hotel at 5:45AM, went to Purbachal first for quickly picking up the Yellow-wattled Lapwing, which is about the only location in Bangladesh you can see it confidently, although there are few locations around the country. We arrived there quite fast using the Elevated Expressway. First thing we got was the Red-wattled Lapwing and pair of Oriental Skylarks. Followed by Bengal Bushlarks & Paddyfield Pipits. We quickly found few Yellow-wattled Lapwings under a gourd vine. Other birds present there were few Long-tailed Shrikes, One Brown Shrike, several Bronzed-winged Jacanas with Newly fledged youngs, Scaly-breasted Munias etc. We also found Common, White-throated & Pied Kingfisher there. Grey Heron & Brahminy Kites gave nice views also. We had an Orange-brested Green Pigeon flyover.

We had breakfast at a Traditional Restaurant nearby and ate like locals. Menu was Tandoor Bread, with Omelette, Vegetable, Lentils & Beef Curry. Bottled Mineral Water and Apples, Oranges were available the whole day.

at Purbachal

at National Botanical Garden

at New Vision Eco City

We then headed to The National Botanical Gardens looking for Owls. We found common birds like Shikra, Jungle Babbler, Black-hooded Oriole etc. Notable were a Black-naped Oriole, Rufous Treepie and Few Species of Drongos namely Black, Ashy & Hair-crested. We found one Brown Boobook only but sadly could not spot the Collared Scops Owl. Among waterbirds we found Bronze-winged Jacana, White-breasted Waterhen and atleast 4 Grey-headed Swamphens which all gave great views out in open. Seeing the roosting Indian Flying Foxes & Two Types of Squirrels were cool.

Thank you, Zaber for the one-day trip to see some birds of Bangladesh. It was a good break for me from a few days of meetings and connecting with different folks. A good chance to enjoy the nature of Bangladesh. Highly recommend Zaber Ansary if you are in Bangladesh.

Mr. Joe H.

Singapore

For Lunch we had Traditional Kacchi Biryani at a famous place and Mr. Joe H. also tasted Borhani & Cashew Nut Sharbat which was new delicacies for him.

We went to New Vision Eco City afterwards looking for Bitterns which did not disappoint. We got brief but good looks at Black Bittern & Yellow Bitterns. Mr. Joe H. picked up Yellow-footed Green Pigeons from here and Chestnut-tailed Starlings. We decided to call it a day and started our return journey through hectic Dhak City evening Traffic. Dropped Mr. Joe H. at his hotel and said goodbye. He did some more work on the next day and returned to Singapore the following night with about 30 Lifers. We found total 71 species of Birds. See the report on eBird here
