Trip Report – Sundarban East WLS Birdwatching Trip – November 2024

Date: November 15-16-17 (Fri-Sat-Sun)

We started from Dhaka at 7PM on Thursday 14th. Boarded ship at 12AM and started our journey south. Arrived at First Location at 6:30AM. We birded for 03 Full Days, Explored Several Narrow Canals and few Boardwalks & Trails. We Returned to Mongla on Sunday 17th at 5PM and safely arrived our homes in Dhaka by Midnight.

Route

Mongla – Tinkona Island – Kokilmoni Forest Station – Tiar Char – Upper Jamtola Canal – Kotka Office and Beach – Dimer Char – Andharmanik – Karamjal – Mongla

Species Highlights: 

Kingfishers: Black-capped, Brown-winged, Blue-eared, Collared, Common and White-throated Kingfishers.

Raptors: White-bellied Sea Eagles, Oriental Honey Buzzard, Peregrine Falcon, Eurasian Hobby, Changeable Hawk-eagle, Shikra.

Waders: Eurasian Curlew, Whimbrel, Common Redshanks, Common Greenshanks, Pacific Golden Plovers, Grey-headed Lapwings.

Woodpeckers: Streak-breasted Woodpecker, Common Flameback, Speckled Piculet, Rufous-woodpecker

Others: Oriental Dollarbird, Orange-bellied Flowerpecker, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Crimson Sunbird etc.

We also saw few Notable Butterflies like the Endemic Sundarban Crow and few nice White Tigers. We saw lots of River Dolphins aswell.

Misses: We missed Ruddy Kingfishers, Buffy-fish Owls,  and surprisingly zero Ospreys and Crested Serpent Eagles.
