Great Myna & Lesser Shortwing in Sherpur – February 2024 Trip Report

Failed Twitch for Collared Falconet

Photo emerged online of a Collared Falconet sighting from a spot in Garo Hills of Sherpur. Which would be a new Country Record bird so we decided to go check for it. We started from Dhaka 03 days later and arrived at spot early. We were accompanied by a driver who knew the spot and were one of the 02 observers. Day started with a nice Crested Serpent Eagle. Sadly the bird was not seen there that day. We checked carefully for about 7 hours but no luck. We had fun photographing flocks of Laughingthrushes, Common Green magpie, a nice Yellow-vented Warbler etc. a surprise Lesser Adjutant flew by. We saw few Vernal Hanging Parrots flying back and forth, probably between food source and nesting site, but distant shots.

Lesser Adjutant in flight, this bird is endangered nationally

We decided to go to our next location where Great Myna occurs and is a lifer for few guests in the group. We arrived there at full noon and looked for it for sometimes. We found at least 02-04 Birds there, bathing and foraging. We had fun photographing it. We also saw  an Indian Spotted Eagle and a Booted Eagle on the way here. Found a pair of Grey-headed Fish Eagles too. We found loads of Temminck’s Stints there and also one Spotted Owlet.

We then went to another Nice spot where many interesting birds were seen recently. But that forest had dried up a lot so evening waterholes were empty there. We found few Asian Barred Owlets there, seen few common birds. We then started our return journey to Sherpur Town.

Nice Lesser necklaced Laughingthrush in the morning.
